How to Choose the Right Industrial Grinding Machine for Spices, Herbs & Tea Leaves
Choosing the proper industrial grinding machinery for spices, herbs and tea leaves hinges on two core criteria: the oil content of your feedstock, and your desired powder particle size.
Different oil contents place different demands on grinding equipment; matching the right mill to your material prevents clogging, preserves flavor, and ensures stable production.
Low-oil feedstock is compatible with nearly all industrial grinding systems, with performance varying primarily by final particle size, production capacity, and powder uniformity. Hammer mills, air classifier mills (ACM), and pin mills are the most widely used solutions for this category. Hammer mills and pin mills typically produce 20–80 mesh powder, while air classifier mills deliver a finer output range of 60–300 mesh.
Not all industrial grinding systems deliver reliable performance for mid-oil feedstock. Conventional screened grinding chambers are prone to clogging and oil accumulation during continuous operation, leading to frequent downtime and inconsistent powder quality.
Guibao's advanced hammer mills and high-speed pin mills are purpose-built for this material category. Engineered with a screenless grinding chamber design, they eliminate blockage risks and deliver uniform, consistent output even during extended production runs.
High-oil feedstock poses unique challenges for industrial grinding. As oils leach out during processing, they commonly cause material caking, chamber adhesion, and repeated unplanned downtime — making standard screened mills unsuitable for sustained high-oil production.
For high-oil applications, heavy-duty pin mills and cryogenic grinding systems are the industry-recommended solutions. Cryogenic grinding systems inject liquid nitrogen directly into the grinding chamber to maintain stable, ultra-low temperatures throughout the process. This suppresses oil exudation, locks in essential oils, flavor profiles and active nutrients, and prevents oily feedstock from softening, caking or sticking to internal machine components during grinding.
For primary crushing and coarse particle production, standard industrial hammer mills are the most cost-effective choice. This grade is commonly used for pre-processing of herbs and spices before fine grinding, or for coarse-cut botanical ingredients.
For conventional spice powder and standard herb powder production, four solutions are available: air classifier mills, advanced hammer mills, pin mills, and cryogenic mills. You can select the most suitable model based on your material oil content and production volume.
For high-precision superfine spice and herb powder, only air classifier mills and cryogenic mills can reliably achieve this fineness range. Air classifier mills are ideal for low-to-mid oil materials, while cryogenic mills handle high-oil materials while retaining full aroma and nutritional value.
